My City Was Gone

Around 11 pm on 10/29/12 I looked out my window and watched Reynold's Channel gush down my street, barreling south towards the Atlantic ocean. Soon the power went, and then the cell towers. Everyone had moved their cars to higher ground, by now the headlights were under water, flickering in the blackness in one last death gasp. The water breached the front door,   rising up into the house.  Nobody on my block evacuated except people with babies and elders. We are water people, we don't back down. We stockpiled water and food, and waited as the ocean met the bay, as cars, homes, lives and savings washed down the dirty boulevard. The water kept, rising, and our City by the Sea was gone.
